Music PEI Week 2018 is coming to a close today after five days of performances and events celebrating Prince Edward Island’s musical talent. Today’s activities included the much anticipated Music PEI Award show at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, along with performances from many of the award winners and nominees at the Festival Finale at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall. Of course, as was foretold in the great announcing of the Music PEI Award nominees, The East Pointers collected a haul of hardware at today’s award show. Music PEI Announces Winner Of The 2018 SOCAN Songwriter Award
The 2018 Music PEI Week is currently in full swing. Last night, the first of the Music PEI Awards was handed out with the awarding of the SOCAN Songwriter of the Year Award during a concert at St. Paul’s Church. The night featured very special performances and interviews from all of this year’s nominees, including Ashley Condon, Alicia Toner, Dennis Ellsworth and Kinley Dowling, Liam Corcoran, and Nick Doneff. Once upon a time, when the worst things I had to worry about were picking up after my dog and occasionally turning in a bit of homework, music seemed to mirror life’s simplicities with a glorious peak of well-polished nonchalance. It was a time of carefree noise and gross exuberance. It was the era of pop punk.
There’s no way around the fact that 2017 was a comparatively complicated and largely unpleasant year. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth to think of it, and people are finding themselves yearning for simpler times.
