MusicNL Announces Longlist For 2019 MusicNL Awards

Ahead of their December 4th, 2019 press conference, MusicNL have announced their longlist nominations for their annual MusicNL Awards. Most prominent among today’s nominations are Rum Ragged, Jenina MacGillivray, and Eastern Owl with four nominations, followed by Nick Earle, Christian Howse, Adam Baxter, Cicerone, Youngtree & The Blooms, and Rozalind MacPhail with three nominations each. It’s been a moment since the release of Newfoundland Americana-Country artist Chris Ryan‘s breakout single, “Last Forever,” and he seems to be perfectly fine with it. A younger Alan Doyle once belonged to a band that famously sang the lines, “We stopped the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn’t tell the time, and at a quarter after two we argued it was nine.” Great Big Sea stood as Canada’s party band for years, and with it came the expectation to party hard and party long themselves. Single: Sherman Downey Longs for the Quiet of Small Towns on ‘Front Porch’

Award-winning Newfoundland folk singer Sherman Downey has been busy. Mid-tour and with a new album on the way, it looks like Downey is going to be on the road for the foreseeable future. It’s the sort of stuff a lot of albums are inevitably crafted from; the life of the touring musician and Downey’s latest, New Beautiful, offers a glimpse at “what it’s like to wander from home and long for return.” His new single, “Front Porch” focuses more on the longing side of that equation and the realization that the relative quiet of a small town can be better than any adventure. East Coast Music Association Announces Mary Walsh as 2020 Awards Show Host

This morning the East Coast Music Association announced the host of their 2020 Music Awards Show and Conference in St. John’s, NL. Continuing in their tradition of handing over the MC duties to a comedian – one that has included The Trailer Park Boys, Jonny Harris, James Mullinger and Jonathan Torrens – this year the ECMAs will be hosted by none other than Newfoundlander Mary Walsh.
