Vacationing In The Republic Of SappyFest
I stumbled into SappyFest XI sometime on Friday evening, exhausted after having just completed a week long tour that culminated with an 18 hour drive from Peterborough, Ontario directly to Sackville, New Brunswick. Folks who frequent the festival have a cult like commitment to it – this was only my second time attending the festival, but I was accompanied by friends who were returning for their tenth year. SappyFest has a reputation in this region – that there is some unknown but powerful force ensuring that the programming will be interesting, you’ll meet great people, and the small maritime town will come alive and steal your heart. Part music festival, part celebration of all things New Brunswick, the event was held at Saint John’s perennial ‘What to do with this next?’ property: Long Wharf, in a fairly unique venue built using a structure much esteemed by the port, and hipsters alike: the humble shipping container. Willie Nelson’s Son Replaces Harvest Jazz & Blues Headliner
Last week Fredericton’s Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival was abuzz with the news that Georgian country-rockers Blackberry Smoke wouldn’t be headlining the festival, or even getting into the country on account of some legal troubles. Today the festival announced they had found their replacement, and that Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real would be taking the place honour on September 14th.
