Matt Mays has been shaking up his own sound and showcasing his versatility since the release of his 2017 album Once Upon a Hell of a Time… and the 2018 acoustic version of the same album a, Twice Upon a Hell of a Time…. It’s the whole premise of his Howl at the Night tour which will be giving audiences across Canada a taste of both sides.
Ahead of the tour he’s released a brand new pair of singles to emphasize that dichotomy. Working with Matthew Angus of Fast Romantics, Mays hits hard on the dance beats for “Let There Be Love” and then pivots for an acoustic version that’s almost a completely different song. Matt Mays is still a few weeks away from releasing Twice Upon A Hell Of A Time…, the acoustic re-dux to his 2017 release Once Upon A Hell Of A Time…, and even though we’ve technically heard it all before, he’s not above teasing out the singles. It has been five years since we last heard from one of the east coast’s most beloved artists, Matt Mays. His last release, Coyote, was a record that saw Mays experience some off the hardest times and greatest achievements in his career. The record won him his first Juno for Rock Recording of the Year in 2014, but also saw the tragic passing of Mays’ long-time friend, guitarist and original El Torpedo member, Jay Smith. Appropriately titled Once Upon A Hell Of A Time, the first tracks from Mays after such a challenging time in his career are a roller coaster that will leave a lump in your throat and restore your faith in humanity at the same time.
