Fredericton’s Highland Games Festival: Haggis & Heavy Things
For one weekend each year, the quite lawn surrounding Government House in Fredericton is transformed into a piece of the Scottish Highlands and flooded with kilted people. Arguably the most determinedly Scottish place outside of the British Isles, the New Brunswick Highland Games Festival erects dozens of Celtically themed tents. Some clans have their own tents with familial memorabilia and history, while other tents house everything from genealogy booths, to bands, to a shop that specializes in plaid. Paddlefest: Come For The Music, Stay For A Lifetime
St. Andrews-By-The-Sea is predominantly a tourist town. The Winters can be long and much less exciting than the boom of the Summer season. The seaside town stays fairly quiet well into Spring, until Paddlefest weekend when the town of a couple thousand is flooded with with an extra five hundred people, ready to partake in music, hiking, and paddling. It is the early days of Spring. The ground has thawed, the birds have begun their persistent mating chortle, and likewise Maritimers have desperately adopted their summer plumage irrespective of the actual temperature. It is also the season of festival announcements; that great heralding of the days to come in which we shall crowd ourselves into tents, bars, and open fields to bathe in a sea of soundwaves and sloshed beer, our senses embracing a microcosm of experiences much as our faces embrace the warm, sticky shoulders of the stranger ahead of us. And so, like the first blossoms of Spring, Fredericton’s Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival have brought tidings of the season to come, teasing us with their line-up.
