The Best Music of 2020

It’s time for The East’s very scientific and democratically sorted list of The Best Music of 2020. As you can imagine, it was quite the year and whatever challenges we faced, we did our best to face them together.

Everything, this is, except for this list. You would not believe the amount of bloodshed we endured to arrive at this moment, the number of bloodied noses, bruised egos and fatally demoralized interns.

Please know, dear reader, that we do this for you, without complaint, as our honour-bound duty. Please, enjoy. Continue reading The Best Music of 2020

The Future of Music is DIY: A Conversation with Alex MacNeil and Andy MacInnis

“When you’re making rock records, you don’t need to overthink production…we can make great rock ‘n’ roll records in this garage.”

As I’m sitting in a small, cramped back room of a house nestled deep in Halifax’s north end I’m flanked on my right side by an old washer and dryer. To the left, a pile of jackets and a stack of skateboards. A half-eaten open-face sandwich sits on the coffee table in front of me.

You wouldn’t guess that this space is the new laboratory of two prominent Halifax rock acts. Continue reading The Future of Music is DIY: A Conversation with Alex MacNeil and Andy MacInnis

Hollerado Frontman Debuts as Mav Karlo – Heads to Atlantic Bubble for Solo Tour

At a cottage property out in Hackett’s Cove on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Menno Versteeg sounds like he’s thriving. The former Hollerado frontman and head of Royal Mountain Records has been enjoying a cozy stint of self-sufficiency for his two weeks of isolation amongst the soothing cottage surroundings. Every day he writes, plays guitar, cooks and explores the waterfront — all while staying keyed in as the head of his record label.

The usually Toronto-based artist has been preparing for a solo tour in support of his new album, Strangers Like Us, and two weeks of quarantine aside, the exceptional circumstances of the Atlantic Bubble have made it possible. These are Versteeg’s first shows since debuting under the name Mav Karlo earlier this year, and they are more than welcome after such a lack of live music. One Album to Another: Sloan Albums Ranked

When it comes to the Top 100 Canadian Albums of all Time, there are a few things that critics can agree on. There are legends you can count on finding every time, like Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, The Tragically Hip, Rush — and Sloan. Made up of Jay Ferguson, Chris Murphy, Patrick Pentland, and Andrew Scott, this four-piece rock band, originally from Halifax, Sloan has historically delivered a sound that has eschewed contemporary tastes for the sound of ‘60s Brit-rock and ‘70s garage rock, but with four songwriters, each with distinctly different styles, it’s difficult to put them into one box.

Each member has amassed his fair share of songwriting credits and, while performing, the band will often reinforce that democratic nature by trading off instruments to accommodate the performance of each other’s songs. Their successful and unique take on band democracy has served them so well that they’ll soon be celebrating 30 years as icons of Canadian music, having created countless radio hits and equally amazing deep cuts.

So how well do you know the work of these beloved rockers? If you haven’t yet delved into their diverse catalogue, allow this guide to help you decide where to start as well as suggest some deep cuts you may have missed! Continue reading One Album to Another: Sloan Albums Ranked

The Best Music of 2019

Welcome to The Best Music of 2019, otherwise known as the principle cause of our annual staff fist fight. After carefully considering, deliberating, arguing and a few unflattering and entirely untrue remarks about some mothers, we have calculated, sorted, and contextualized what may amount to, more or less, the best music produced in Atlantic Canada during this year of our Lord, 2019. At least, according to some. The rest, we assure you, have been disposed of as humanely as possible. The undertaking has called into question our judgement, our tastes, our ethics, and any belief in a higher power, but we do so hope that enjoy this finished product.
