Usually around this time of year we are dealing with more Christmas music than we know what to do with and while we certainly got an earful in 2019, it wasn’t quite the usual deluge. More than that, what we did hear might only be described as “polarizing” – splitting the holiday season between songs that are a little unconventional and some so traditional that even the Catholic church probably hasn’t bothered to dust them off this century. Despite already teasing a fresh single for the new year, Halifax’s Nathaniel Cole didn’t waste the opportunity to surprise us with a little Christmas magic this morning. While “Spend It Right” sounds like the sort of tune you’d listen to while celebrating the holidays aboard a G8, the message is decidedly one of an anti-capitalist nature, with Cole reminding us that the best gift we can give over the holidays is our time.
