It’s November, and our stock of Vitamin D is already dwindling. The sun has almost completely abandoned the northern hemisphere, and if it weren’t for the lawn we’d already be festering in a monochromatic hellscape. Thankfully, the 13th annual In the Dead of Winter Festival is Halifax’s answer to the winter blues. This year, the songwriter-based festival will offer three action-packed days, featuring twenty-five acts, including headliners Waxahatchee, Terra Lightfoot, Simone Schmidt and Kaia Kater. Erin Costelo Makes History At Nova Scotia Music Week 2017
Music Nova Scotia handed out fifty awards on Sunday, November 5th during the annual Nova Scotia Music Week. Everyone who took home an award was a winner, but like Charlie Sheen on a good day, some were destined to win more than others. In particular, Erin Costelo made history by being the first woman to take home the award for the 2017 Producer Of The Year. Continue reading Erin Costelo Makes History At Nova Scotia Music Week 2017
Port Cities Clean Up At Nova Scotia Music Week 2017
Remember earlier this year when Jenn Grant was announced as a sure thing to take home an award from Music Nova Scotia? Nova Scotia Music Week has come and gone, and in its wake Jenn Grant is left with none of her seven nominations. Instead, Port Cities cleaned up in nearly ever category, beating out the competition for five out of six of their nominations. We’re surprised there hasn’t been a parade for them yet. Monthly Roundup: October 2017
October was a rough month for Canada as we collectively mourned the loss of Gord Downie. We were lucky to have him. As a songwriter he touched on so many themes and locations that we associate with as Canadians that his songs have become inextricably linked to the very things he was singing about. In the act of celebrating—and sometimes criticizing—Canada, he helped to define our culture, our country, and became part of that definition. The Tragically Hip will long reign as ‘Canada’s Band’.
We also lost someone closer to home with the death of John Dunsworth. The Nova Scotian actor best known for his role as Jim Lahey on Trailer Park Boys passed away this month. For better or worse, he brought a spotlight to the Maritimes as well as a way of life that would sometimes shines through the cracks that appeared between mockumentary and documentary. At least he showed us how we could laugh at ourselves.
Aside from that we saw the tail end of album release season. Let us know what you liked best. We always love hearing your feedback!
