February, despite having only 28 days, is easily one of the longest months. It is a month typically best spent indoors celebrating the virtues of introspection and hibernation. If only climate change wasn’t making it look so damn nice outside…
Congratulations! We’ve all survived 2017, and got a head start on a shiny new year. I feel confident about this, like we learned a lesson from last year. We’ve toughened up some, and we’re no longer the sort of doughy sacks that would have quivered at impending nuclear fallout. We brushed that off like it was nothing. We’ve got this. We are totally prepared for the angry army of cloned monkey super-soldiers that China is about to unleash. No big deal.
It’s time to put 2017 to bed, and we haven’t decided whether we should be looking forward to 2018 or dreading it all the more. Hopefully we’ve learned a few lessons and will be all the better for it. In his song ‘As Days Go By’, Jesse Frederick immortalized the words, “It’s a rare condition, this day and age, to read any good news on the newspaper page.” That was in 1989: a time before 9/11, Twitter, and Donald Trump’s political career. If he had only know what the next few decades would bring… 2017 was, at best, a warning shot. It was a new benchmark. It was a year that should stand out in history as a lesson, a painful reminder that we can do better, because while we could do worse, we wouldn’t survive it very long.
