Catherine MacLellan, The East Pointers, Ashley Condon, and Dennis Ellsworth & Kinley Dowling Tied For 2018 Music PEI Awards

How many award-winning musicians can you fit on an island? The upcoming Music PEI Week in January should be able to answer that as they cram almost every one of their musicians and industry professionals into a conference  room. We’ve even got the list of nominees for their 2018 Awards to give us an idea of who will be attending. Shivering Songs Announce 2018 Line-Up

Shivering Songs, Fredericton’s midwinter festival of songwriting and storytelling are gearing up for this year’s edition and have announced the 2018 lineup. Now in their eighth year, Shivering Songs have earned their reputation as connoisseurs of fine song and songcraft, bringing in acts that tend to the poetic side of things. Held during one of the coldest months of the year, the festival brings  a bit of sunshine—or at least a good story—to brighten those dark winter days.  Continue reading Shivering Songs Announce 2018 Line-Up

In the Dead of Winter Festival Announces 2018 Lineup

It’s November, and our stock of Vitamin D is already dwindling. The sun has almost completely abandoned the northern hemisphere, and if it weren’t for the lawn we’d already be festering in a monochromatic hellscape. Thankfully, the 13th annual In the Dead of Winter Festival is Halifax’s answer to the winter blues. This year, the songwriter-based festival will offer three action-packed days, featuring twenty-five acts, including headliners Waxahatchee, Terra Lightfoot, Simone Schmidt and Kaia Kater. Port Cities Clean Up At Nova Scotia Music Week 2017

Remember earlier this year when Jenn Grant was announced as a sure thing to take home an award from Music Nova Scotia? Nova Scotia Music Week has come and gone, and in its wake Jenn Grant is left with none of her seven nominations. Instead, Port Cities cleaned up in nearly ever category, beating out the competition for five out of six of their nominations. We’re surprised there hasn’t been a parade for them yet. Monthly Roundup: October 2017

October was a rough month for Canada as we collectively mourned the loss of Gord Downie. We were lucky to have him. As a songwriter he touched on so many themes and locations that we associate with as Canadians that his songs have become inextricably linked to the very things he was singing about. In the act of celebrating—and sometimes criticizing—Canada, he helped to define our culture, our country, and became part of that definition. The Tragically Hip will long reign as ‘Canada’s Band’.

We also lost someone closer to home with the death of John Dunsworth. The Nova Scotian actor best known for his role as Jim Lahey on Trailer Park Boys passed away this month. For better or worse, he brought a spotlight to the Maritimes as well as a way of life that would sometimes shines through the cracks that appeared between mockumentary and documentary. At least he showed us how we could laugh at ourselves.

Aside from that we saw the tail end of album release season. Let us know what you liked best. We always love hearing your feedback!
