Throughout 2018, Adam Young challenged himself to write a song every day. It was outside of the norm for the Cape Breton pianist, who could count on one hand how many songs he had written in the past two decades. But the task was more than accomplished, and sewing together the songs and movements he devised over those 365 days, Young has put together Yearbook, a collection reveling in the artist’s folksy tradition and highlighting just where his artistry can go. Think of an egg—an archetypal, wonderfully oval chicken egg. We see this as a singular object, but it’s composed of such vastly different and symbiotic parts. The firm yet fragile shell, holding its iconic shape or transforming into something jagged. The aether-like albumen that swirls within the space. And the core of it all, the yolk, is a glorious dot of radiance ready to emerge.
