Retrospective: Looking Back Ten Years Later on Rich Aucoin’s ‘We’re All Dying to Live’

Ten years ago, if you already knew about the release of Rich Aucoin’s debut LP, We’re All Dying to Live, it was probably because you knew Rich Aucoin. Aucoin is first and foremost an entertainer: a living, walking, breathing party and his live shows, complete with confetti canons and coloured parachute, have become the stuff of legend. Long before his music was ever a twinkle in a jewel case, he was putting in the leg work—often quite literally—by travelling back and forth across the country. Now, it’s not unlikely that you or one of your friends know Rich personally, or at least have his phone number.

That perpetual party state of mind is what powers We’re All Dying to Live. It’s an electro-pop album that desperately teeters between a world of fun and a life of responsibility. A decade later, it’s clear what side of the equation Aucoin landed on, and in celebration of the album’s ten-year anniversary, we’re looking back to see if We’re All Dying to Live still brings the party. Terra Spencer Revisits Windsor’s Beloved Cotton Mill on ‘Brick and Mortar’ Duet Featuring Stewart Legere

Terra Spencer has a big soft spot for cotton mills, though one cotton mill clearly stands out in particular. The crumbling brick figure of the cotton mill looms large over the identity of Terra Spencer’s hometown of Windsor, Nova Scotia and has found its way into her music on more than one occasion.

With the news that the roof had collapsed on the 140-year old landmark, it brought the building’s longevity squarely into question and the heart of Spencer’s new song, “Brick and Mortar” which she describes as a “heart-charged meditation on the gentle art of saying goodbye.” Continue reading Terra Spencer Revisits Windsor’s Beloved Cotton Mill on ‘Brick and Mortar’ Duet Featuring Stewart Legere

Wicked Vices’ ‘Athlone St.’ is About the Struggle of ‘Being Married to Four Other People’

The upcoming album of Fredericton’s Wicked Vices has the band pulling from their backlog of material, with a few tracks emerging from more than a couple of years ago. The previously released on-the-road rocker “Butterfly”  had been pieced together at the beginning of the pandemic, while their late-night summer jam “Liquor” has been around almost as long as the band has.

Their newest single, “Athlone St.”, finds its foundations in a riff from all the way back in 2017. While that’s something of a testament to the band’s longevity—let’s be honest, four years is more like forty in band years—the song is actually about the rifts that nearly tore the band apart.
