Dad Patrol have returned with their first single since the release of their album Yellow Phase in late 2020. “Sinful Ways” is the band’s first single that features their new lineup and details a fall from grace—though, to be honest, there are plenty of things out there that seem more enjoyable than grace, at least in the short run.
According to guitar Zach Pelletier, the Dad Patrol hasn’t succumbed to any internal strife, leading to an upheaval and overhaul of the band, but they have added a bassist and second guitarist to fill out their sound.
“It’s still Gregor Dobson singing, Jonathan Marino on drums, and me on guitar,” says Pelletier. “but we’ve added Luka Malatestinic as our bassist and Simon Boudreau playing another guitar.”
The newly rounded out quintet spent a weekend recording the new singly, along with a handful of other songs, at a cabin well off the beaten path, disrupting the peaceful solitude found that can be found only in the middle of nowhere.
“We had no wifi or phone service or anything so all we ever did was eat, sleep, and record music. It was kinda the dream,” explains Pelletier. “Gregor and I wrote this one a while ago in his apartment and it kinda just came together all at once. We were goofing around on a couple of acoustics, just playing whatever and then we stumbled upon some riffs we liked, started making up lyrics, and, in probably the same thirty minutes, we had the whole song demoed out.
“I’ve heard Gregor describe the lyrics as ‘Romeo and Juliet, but make it cowboys and motorcycles’,” adds Pelletier, though it’s unclear whether Lou Reed fits into that picture. While “Sinful Ways” sounds like it’s just about the right era for a Baz Luhrmann feature, it’s decidedly more Pearl Jam than Prince, with Gregor Dobson belting out the unholy doings of angels for all to hear.
