Halifax’s Century Egg comes at us with their banging new single, “Moving On.” Kicking in with a tight, layered intro, piling crunchy guitars on top of a propulsive beat, we waste no time delivering the goods. In this case, a layered vocal treat, both airy and solid, gets us to the hook in just 11 seconds.
Century Egg describe themselves as a “band of escape artists with a focus on playing visceral punk rock,” consisting of Shane Song (vocals), Matty Grace ( bass/backing vocals), Robert Drisdelle ( (guitar) and Megumi Yoshida (drums). Away from Century Egg, Song works as a visual artist/video game artist, Grace plays in numerous bands including Cluttered (tipped by Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!), Drisdelle plays and arranges with Lido Pimienta (amongst other projects) and Yoshida performs in Bad Vibrations, Dog Day, Not You and more.
With this sort of diverse background, Century Egg are remarkably focused likely owing to the mountain of experience represented by these four musicians.
Speaking about the new single, Century Egg says: “This is a song about trying to detach yourself from your past and let go of the trauma that holds you back from finally feeling better.”
Drawing inspirations from Asian pop and rock artists such as Faye Wong, Jun Togawa, Spitz, Cui Jian, Pu Shu, along with the driving post-punk rhythm section and blistering guitar work taken from The Stooges, Thin Lizzy, etc., Century Egg’s “Moving On” possesses a melodic rock vibe that they have built on masterfully. This is punctuated by the optimistically sung “I am moving on”—a line that holds the song together and lets the message soar over the stripped-down and tough-sounding arrangement.
This new single makes up the first half of a double A-side single release. “Mirror,” the second of the two singles, is expected to follow next month.
