Melonvine has taken to the seas to become the T-Pain of the Martimes. It’s not quite a yacht they’ve commandeered, nor is the speed anything even approaching blistering, but they are most definitely afloat and in the correct state of mind for such nautical adventures. “Sail Away” sees the band raising the bar once again with their latest single.
Last we heard from Derek Thibeault of Melonvine was back in 2020 with the recent announcement that he’d be taking Melonvine from a three-piece to a solo act, while working with producer and engineer, Don Levandier (The Motorleague) At the time, it immediately resulted in Melonvine’s strongest material with the release of “Confessions” and “Count Me In.”
It seems that the winds have shifted once again, with Thibeault tapping Quenny Stevens of the Royal Volts sitting in on drums and, seemingly, taking up some of the heavy lifting that also plays a major theme on the new single.
“Having Quenny Stevens on board to join me for the video was key,” says Thibeault. “He brings so much energy on the drums. ‘Sail Away’ really focuses on having to take a step back and go away for a little while when things get too heavy. Taking time to reset is very important.
“I really took my time crafting this track by going back and forth, trying to mark a decent melody. Just wanted to have a fun, short poppy rock song that people could vibe to. I wanted to try highlighting a hook on this one.”
And hook Thibeault did. You might as well start calling him Captain.
Besides Levandier and Stevens, Thibeault also turned to Benjamin Stewart who took on the role of directing and shooting the video for “Sail Away.” The results pretty much speak for themselves; this video follows in the proud tradition of pop punk/slacker rock videos that thrived in the early 2000s and were championed by the likes of Sum 41 and, later, Lonely Island. There’s a strong emphasis on fun, and being on a fishing boat can only help.
“It was a blast drinking loads of coffee and getting silly on a boat. 10/10 would recommend. Benjamin came up with so many ideas for the video that just worked perfectly,” says Thibeault.
The band would also like to know that they’re open to performing at your next boat party, and are available for booking immediately.
