Daveband Launches ‘This Was Your Dad at 28’ Vinyl Campaign With Carefree New Video for ‘Lemonade’

Celebrating the one-year anniversary of the release of Daveband’s This Was Your Dad at 28, Dave has announced that they’re going all out. Or, at least, he proposes a going out of some variety… conditionally. To mark the occasion, Daveband have re-released the single, “Lemonade” with a brand new video. The real news, however, is that at long last, Daveband have launched a pre-order campaign so that you might enjoy This Was Your Dad at 28 in just the format that your dad would have enjoyed it: vinyl.

This Was Your Dad at 28 was a punchy little 10-track that details the adventures of Dave in his twenties. Like most twenty-somethings, to ordeal came with its ups and downs and the results may have varied, but otherwise resulted in a solidly fun album.

This was, arguably, never better exemplified than on the track-recently-turned-video, “Lemonade.”

“‘Lemonade’ is about unexpectedly losing my job (pre-Covid) and committing myself to making the best of the situation (ie. making lemonade out of lemons),” explains the titular Dave of Daveband.

“This morning I had a job. This afternoon I don’t. I guess I’ll go get a haircut, not because I’m looking for a job, but because I never had the time to go,” sings Dave about the upsides of finding yourself with a sudden superabundance of free time. It’s a double-edged that highlights the fact that we largely trade our time for money in quantities that might be better served in other ways, but this might not be the place to argue the benefits of a four-day workweek.

Dave describes the song as a “summery power-pop guitar bop that takes cues from East Coast rock godfathers Sloan and Thrush Hermit” but cranks it up a notch to emphasize that summer doesn’t last forever. Go hard before things get hard, as they say.

“Despite the sound, it’s not pure sunshine pop though. Not unlike the first cool breeze that sneaks in in late summer and has you reaching for your fall flannel, the harder-edged bridge adds a melancholic reality check, which serves to recontextualize the song. A touch of dark to make the light glow brighter. The hope is it becomes clear that simply hoping for good times in the sun is not enough to ensure they happen.”

Filmed in Chicago in Summer 2019—the before times—the new video captures Dave living the enviable life of Riley, providing a stark contrast to the last couple of years, during which the album’s release tour was completely canceled.

“I was traveling there for an ultimate frisbee tournament and had the chance to tack on a couple extra days to tour around and see the sites. A friend I was traveling with helped get cellphone footage of us touring around and goofing off,” explains Dave. “It was supposed to capture the fun, summery, carpe diem kinda vibes I spoke to in the song. It’s an interesting document to look at now given the context of what’s happened to international travel in the past two years.”

Daveband is making up for lost time, however, with a series of dates planned across the Maritimes to promote the vinyl pre-order campaign, but if you’d like to pre-order your vinyl (or any number of additional campaign perks) be sure to check out the IndieGoGo campaign here.
