Janet Cull Gets Deeply Personal With Intoxication Results on New Album ‘Hear It’

One of Newfoundland’s most prolific and celebrated vocalists, Janet Cull exceeds all expectations with the release of her latest album, Hear It.

Like pages torn from a diary, the album begins with a spoken introduction, taking the audience on a journey of deep heartache, complicated relationships, and ultimately, repair.

This sultry self-love saga was recorded live at CBC’s Studio F in St. John’s and spans genres such as rhythm and blues, modern to Memphis soul, fused with gospel inspiration from her childhood of singing in the local choir.

Because of Cull’s earthy, raw vocals and the spontaneous nature of her band—comprised of bassist Josh Ward, guitarist Brad Jefford, and multi-instrumentalist Jason Howard—all tracks were recorded live off the floor, creating a truly unique and transparent experience.

“I like to experiment with sound,” Cull said in recent a radio interview with Saltwire Connects. This is apparent when listening to tracks such as “Fly” where the tone picks up and we hear Cull’s voice used in a new way. The lyrics are hopeful and encourage a narrative that we are all in this together. “We gonna fly so high” is sung with a full throat as the song fades out with happy harmonies before evolving into the experimental, spoken title track “Hear It.”

After 20 years of performing and earning plenty of accolades, such as 2009 Music Educator of the Year and 3 MusicNL awards for her 2016 release Real Tough Love (including Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Pop/Rock Artist of the Year), we thought that she had found her place in music; however, she surprised us again!

As the album comes to a close, we are sent away with the eclectic, contralto vocals of “I Turned Woman.” A vulnerable love letter to the women of the world and to herself. A reminder of the strength and courage it takes for a woman to harness her confidence and power.

“Now these tides they do last longer, I know you women understand all that. Since I’m no longer just a daughter, since I turned woman.”

This album feels like a league of its own. With intoxicating vocals leading the way and an air-tight band following closely behind, we can’t help but appreciate the artistry and talent that is Janet Cull.
