Music•Musique NB (MNB) has announced the list of contenders for the 2021 Prix MNB Awards today with some surprising but much-deserving nominees emerging as front-runners. Topping the list of nominees is the 230-member Choeur virtuel de l’Acadie taking five nominations.
Having begun as a project to allow a few friends to sing together virtually, Choeur virtuel de l’Acadie clearly gained a bit of momentum and is now a full-fledged choir of 230 members. Following immediately behind is Moncton’s diversely talented, genre-spanning seven-piece ensemble Les Moontunes with four nominations. Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Émilie Landry, Kylie Fox, M3D14 (pronounced “media”), and One8tea each received three nominations themselves.
Executive Director Jean Surette notes that this years’ nominees stand out as a good representation of the diversity of New Brunswick’s music community, having made a special effort in the past year to better diversify the list of jurors itself.
“We recognize that inclusion is a journey, and that we need to keep asking who is not at the table,” says Surette. “We’re hopeful that each step, each policy, each decision makes our association just that little bit more welcoming.”
After consulting with the Music•Musique NB membership, the MNB Directors say they will also be strengthening those commitments to the organization’s openness and equality with a 3-year strategic plan, for 2022-2025.
