Rachel Cousins, MusicNL’s 2020 Pop Artist Of the Year, has just released her own version of “No Scrubs.” Cousins’ new single might not be a verbatim rendition of TLC’s 1999 hit but, at its heart, “Love Language” makes it pretty clear that a scrub is a guy that can get no love from Cousins.
“Love Language” is a declaration of independence from Cousins. When it comes to her romantic interests, she makes it very clear that you need to get on the same level as this rising star. Anyone who can’t keep up need not apply.
“I love listening to songs that make me feel confident in myself and in my relationships,” explains Cousins. “My new single, ‘Love Language,’ is an empowering anthem for all of the independent people out there. It’s a track that captures my evolution into a pop artist from my background in folk, showcasing my vocals, which match the song’s powerful production.”
Cousins reinforces that TLC comparison with the single’s artwork. There’s an intentionally—dare we say—retro design to it that could be been the cover art for Muchmusic Dance Mix ’90s. This thing pops like a grade nine sock hop.
“All booked up, I got no time to sit around drying my eyes,” sings Cousins in an expression that boldly states intention, ambition, and establishes healthy goals and boundaries. As this modern bit of internet wisdom suggests, she is unbothered, moisturized, happy, in her lane, focused, and flourishing.
“I’m a busy independent young woman running her own career, so I know that I personally don’t have time for people that give you 10% when you’re giving 90%,” says Cousins. “This can be much easier said than done, but that line really captures the mood of ‘Love Language’.”
“Love Language” makes it clear that if you’re going to holla at Cousins—from the passenger side of your best friend’s ride or anywhere else—you can expect a serious vibe check.
