No one has been more eager to hit the road than Antigonish-expats The Trews. While many bands released music over the last year and a year that lamented their woeful circumstances, the loss of their livelihood, the lack of live audiences, and languishing without being able to do what they love most, few did it on the same scale as The Trews did with their single “I Wanna Play” — though they did get to play to a max capacity arena at the time (read: empty).
According to the band, this lackluster period of our lives has not been without a silver lining. It’s been the percolator that’s brought their newly announced seventh studio album to a boil, simultaneously bringing about a bizarre source of inspiration while stripping them of all distraction. The album’s title track, “The Wanderer” was released today.
The band say that this song, and the album along with it, have been strengthened by the extra attention they were able to give it during the grand lull.
“This is a really strong rock record from start to finish. Every song was mulled over extensively,” says The Trews’ guitarist John-Angus MacDonald. “The pandemic bought us more time which you always need with songwriting. There are songs that would not be on this record had it happened another way.”
“We accidentally honed our recording skills because there was no live show to get to,” adds vocalist, guitarist, and brother Colin MacDonald.
They dove into those recording skills, throwing their weight behind projects like fellow east-coasters Andre Pettipas & The Giants album No Fools No Fun. For their own upcoming album, The Trews are once again working with Civilianaires producer Derek Hoffman, along with Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson, along with Eric Ratz for the aforementioned “I Wanna Play.”
The Trews’ upcoming album, Wanderer, is set to be released on November 19, 2021, and can be pre-ordered immediately. Also, quite importantly, we have a number of live shows that the band has announced and are, no doubt, eager to perform.
