Andrew Waite is back with a summertime anthem about finding love the hard way, even if it takes more than a few tries. “Full Time, Tryin’ 2 Luv” would be the feel-good hit of the season, and still can be, if you’re capable of overlooking just how awful dating can be.
In typical Waite fashion, there’s a whole horn section that is prepared to buoy our spirits as “Full Time, Tryin’ 2 Luv” charges on with relentless optimism after a year and a half of doom and gloom and a near-total absence of friendly strangers. It’s a tasty hit about, reinforced by the vocals of Reeny Smith, that enthusiastically says “It’s not me. It’s you.”
“It’s essentially a song about being our own worst enemies or getting in our own way when it comes to trying to find love,” says Waite.
As Waite sings on the single, “Trying to love, but we make it so hard (on ourselves),” sometimes relationships take work and sometimes that work needs to be done on yourself before it throwing another person into the mix. Waite, however, notes that his dating days are safely behind him.
Co-written with Colin MacDonald (The Trews) and Chris Kirby (who also produced), the song is packed with all the energy you’d expect from a comedic speed-dating montage.
“I wanted to create a song that played with the classic concept of trying to find love—but turned on its head and kicked up a few notches,” says Waite. “I think we hit the perfect balance between pop and something a little folksier, ending up with a sound that is both light and powerful, and a vibe that is so emblematic of Island summers. Everyone who worked on this track—Colin MacDonald, Chris Kirby, Reeny Smith and her sisters, and so many others—put their heart into it, and I think it really shows.”
“Full Time, Tryin’ 2 Luv” is the third single to be released from Waite’s forthcoming album, which is expected to see the light of day sometime in September 2021.
