There’s an endearing reality to Moira Bren’s latest single, “Already Homesick.” Following on the tails of her ECMA-nominated debut EP, 6 is Green, “Already Homesick” is touching in the way that it details the tiny minutiae of life at home with her parents—from the infinitely complex relationships that we form with our siblings to the familiar sounds of the family pet. There may have never been a line from a chorus more hilariously relatable than Bren’s plaintive plea of “who’s going to file my income taxes?”
Moira Bren may have jumped the gun by just a little bit on “Already Homesick,” given the difficulties most people are having making any of life’s big decisions at the moment, not to mention the increasing number of millennials moving back in with the folks, but it’s never too soon to start dreading change.
The flip side of this is, of course, recognizing what it is that you appreciate about what you have, but some changes are inevitable. Moira Bren has plans to relocate to Montreal, to start a Masters program in Music Therapy come September, but as the song says, she’s already homesick and hasn’t even left yet. Braving the real world to build a life of your own means a trade-off and the risk that you’re going to have to do your own taxes.
“Written in 2019, this song is about being scared of moving away from home,” says Bren. “I posted a snippet of the song on Instagram and people really related to it – so two years later I decided to finally record it. Incorporated into the song are short audio recordings that remind me of home including my sister’s voice and my cat Barley’s meow. The song is especially relevant to me now as I am planning to move out in September and I am ‘already homesick’.”
