Paragon Cause have returned with the own special brand of the ethereal electro-rock. Their latest single “Think I’m Going Crazy Over You,” or the Jupiter Mix thereof, indulges in the modern themes of mental fatigue and DIY-esthetics of a family home video on steroids and maybe something more.
The duo of Ottawa-based, East Coast ex-pats Jay Bonaparte and Michelle Opthof, have been working in collaboration with songwriters/producers Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) and Liam Howe (The Sneaker Pimps/FKA Twiggs/Lana Del Ray), to craft the esoteric stuffs of their upcoming album, Autopilot.
“The idea was to take the lyrics and melody for ‘Think I’m Going Crazy Over You’ and create different music to accompany it, changing the meaning of the song each time. We wanted to experiment with the power of music and sound, so we recorded three different versions of the same song,” says Bonaparte.
“We wanted to show how an individual can view one single situation from a different point of view, depending on the day, their feelings, their point of view,” adds Opthof.
While three versions of the song exist (the official single version having been recorded with producer Liam Howe and named for his use of his Jupiter 8 synthesizer), all versions of the song express a frustration at feeling powerless in an immersive situation.
“I was in one of those moods where I was frustrated with something going on around me and my inability to make change for something, I feel really passionate about,” says Opthof who wrote the lyrics, tapping into a near-universal constant at the moment.
For the video, under the obvious and unfortunate circumstances, the duo turned to their (literal) in-house production team. Tapping the talents of his teenage daughters, Bonaparte took to their neighbourhood to film their quasi-dystopian music video with their iPhones—projecting it back on their living room wall, awash in gels and filters, pursuing clandestine operations of an entirely mysterious nature.
