Justin Fancy throws a little ingenuity onto his video for “Makes Me Wanna.” The Conception Bay, NL musician (and recent winner of Music NL’s 2021 Country Artist of the Year and Breakthrough Artist of the Year) has released the second single from his 2020 album, Sure Beats a Good Time but when plans for shooting a new video fell through (for reason that need not be mentioned), Fancy took to making lemonade.
Luckily for Fancy, he just happened to release two stand-alone singles before the release of Sure Beats a Good Time: “Long Time Comin'” and “Think About You”(with the former winning the 2021 Canadian Independent Music Video Award for Best Country Music video). Both featured Fancy’s long-time friend and Big Brother Canada (Season 7) contestant Samantha Picco.
With two videos shot and a solid amount of footage already in the can, Fancy managed a splice and dice, interjected with some fresh video from the studio, and inadvertently turn “Makes Me Wanna” into a loose trilogy. Already working in the time-honoured and universally comprehensible theme of break-ups, Fancy turned to another time-honoured trope employed by television producers everywhere to get his point across: the flashback. “Makes Me Wanna” is, effectively, “The Menagerie” of country music.
Despite the video production hiccups, the song still shines and might even stand for the symbol of perseverance Fancy suggests in the lyrics.
“I always worry I’m putting too much on the table with my songs. But I’m not afraid to wear my heart on my sleeve. I wrote ‘Makes Me Wanna’ when thinking back on a past relationship and the feeling of struggling to understand why you can’t get over someone. It was an emotional and frustrating time in my life,” says Fancy.
“The song is all about committing yourself to the process of getting over someone but also realizing that we’re in charge of our own destinies. We just have to trust in the process.”
