At long last, Michael Feuerstack has revealed to us what the polar opposite of Danko Jones’ 2002 hit “Lovercall” would sound like. From Feuerstack’s upcoming album, Harmonize the Moon, “Call of the Tired” is a song for the weary, a lowkey anthem for when you’re too tired to get yourself as far as your bed and the pervasive nature of exhaustion.
With all the exuberance of gently upturned gravel, Feuerstack saunters into the song with a poignant “Your mind was broken, your spirit was beat, you spilled like a fruit stand on a hot city street,” as if to say “there’s simply no coming back from this.” That line itself spells out a whole scenario in which the only possible response is a sheepish shrug, the daunting task of collecting up your fruit and the inevitable decision to pack it in for the day.
The song sets the tone for much of the album or, rather, it was the circumstances under which the song was created, having been recorded in the quarantine-isolation of Feuerstack’s apartment. The fruit stand is almost a nostalgic little euphemism with which we can collectively reminisce of the days of yore in which fruit stands might we have overturned, instead of the upset applecart in which we now find ourselves living in.
“‘Call of the Tired’ was one of the cornerstone songs when I was writing this record,” says Feuerstack. “It’s kind of like a drowsy pep talk if you can imagine such a thing. It’s a song that conserves energy so that it can be shared.”
Michael Feuerstack’s album, Harmonize the Moon, is scheduled to be officially released on March 19, 2021 via Forward Music Group. The album’s vinyl pre-order, however, is available immediately via Bandcamp, although the limited run of 150 copies of both standard black and translucent orange are already dangerously close to selling out.
