Hailing from the big, sparkly city of Halifax, Nova Scotia comes the equally sparkly Sundae Girl. The indie-rock five-piece have already made already an impressive climb into the music scene and their debut EP, Just For Fun, can be expected to propel them onwards and upwards. Channelling inspiration from bands like The Strokes and The Cure, Sundae Girl have brought in their own bubbly, beach-rock vibe. This four-track mantra looks for the bright side in spite of everything and it’s as enjoyable as it is timely.
“Faces,” the single off the album, spiced up with its own music video, starts us off on the opposite side of the album’s fence. Utilizing themes of self-doubt, struggle with instruments made of pure magic to remind listeners that the end goal is to be kind to yourself as you come to terms with your own shadows.
On the other side of the spectrum, “Rock Show,” sporting the album’s most ear-catching and commanding guitar performance, throws caution to the wind for the sake of a great time that may or may not involve heartbreak down the line. Such actions may invite more pressure to be handled, sure, but it seems that Sundae Girl encourages whatever cocas your cola.
It seems that surrounding oneself in one’s happy place is exactly how the subject of “Stay Home” gets their cola coca’d. With the album’s most fitting song title for the times we live in, “Stay Home” perfectly culminates the range of the band’s sound into a forward-thinking, walk-to-my-own-song with confidence bursting from its seams.
Finally, “Sandbar” offers up the most interesting combination of sound we’ve seen so far; the pace of the tune is on par with a run on the beach after a cup of coffee, while the more bass-laden parts take on a very drifty and dreamy quality.
With plenty of buzz surrounding the indie-rock outfit, evidenced by appearances across Atlantic Canada, Sundae Girl have carved out a high-vitality sound that’s sure to bring them centre-stage in everyone’s mind.
