New Glasgow’s hard-rocking StoneHouse has returned with a pair of spooky singles just in time for Halloween. The songs are the band’s first two singles to see the light of day since they released their 2018 album, Just Breakin’ Even, and with them comes a couple of changes.
Truth be told, only of the single to be released tonight is an original: “Bare Bones.”
“This is the first release since we became a three-piece. We matured as people and the music matured as well,” explains bassist Pat Walsh. “The first two albums were mostly rock ‘n’ roll for the purpose of rock ‘n’ roll. Our new music has more of a thoughtful, lyrical approach – as you can hear in ‘Bare Bones.'”
Recorded and mixed by Randy Swallow and mastered by Lacquer Channel, “Bare Bones” is a seductive stripped-down slow groove. Bass, drum, guitar and sweat. It’s cheeky, with the Mike McGrather expressing with desperation his desire to peel away some layers, but it could just as well refer to the band’s new sound.
The second is a cover of the hardest-hitting song in The Beatles’ catalogue, “Helter Skelter.” This is the song that supposedly inspired a series of murders committed by the Manson Family.
“We were always very heavy on the originals and played very little covers,” says Walsh. “Releasing ‘Helter Skelter’ is a curveball for the fans.”
StoneHouse, naturally put their own twist on it, throwing in a heavy mid-song groove. “We created our own version of it. We feel like it fits right into our set, says Walsh, and knowing the energy that the band put into their live sets, we’d have to agree.
StoneHouse say that they have also recently invested in the creation of a basement studio. “We have MANY more songs to come, and are ACHING to take the stage live and tour, tour, tour!”
