Nestled inside of a mini-doc on what it means to find yourself and the often difficult path that journey will take, KINLEY has released a new live music video for her song “Tuesday’s Child.”
From her second album, the self-titled KINLEY, “Tuesday’s Child” helped to form a major anthem that ran through the album. It was a celebration of Dowling’s own journey of discovering her personal identity through songwriting, championing optimism, and a call for self-love.
Performed live at Cavendish Beach’s drive-in festival experience this summer, with KINLEY joined for the performance by Vince The Messenger, the release of “Tuesday’s Child” is presented as a compassionate message to students heading into uncertain waters this year. While school unfortunately and almost inevitably comes with a burden of anxiety, and worse still, bullying, KINLEY at least reminds us that we were never alone.
The music portion of the video, however, is tucked away closer to the end, and KINLEY changes up the format by delving into its subject matter with a couple of friends. Daniel Butterfield (aka Vince The Messenger), 22, and Zaneta Ambassa, who is almost 16, have had more recent experiences with their shared alma mater, Charlottetown Rural high school. KINLEY asks Ambassa and Butterfield how they’ve navigated bullies, cliques, fitting in, and how it’s led to their discovery of self, particularly during what we might come to think of as an Age of Awakening, provided we all survive it.
“With everything that has been happening in the world over the last few months, I felt like there was more I could do to share the voices of others, especially the voices of BIPOC artists,” says KINLEY. “As someone who spent most of my career in the Canadian Folk scene, where almost everyone around me looked like me, I knew that I could leverage this spotlight; I knew that it was time for me to share the microphone again.
“Vince and Zanetta are both two strong voices in my community who are achieving excellence and I have admired them both for so long. I feel lucky to have Vince featured on this song because he is one of my favourite lyricists in PEI and to have had the opportunity to interview two incredibly talented, passionate, and very wise young artists.
“I wish I had some of their advice when I was going back to school.”
