Hot x Proxy are starting to feel their age. It’s a sorry state to be in for any working rocking band, but the fourpiece have found a surefire method for coping: “Fake It”. With a dose of self-awareness, and probably a little joint pain, the band’s new single brings it like it’s still 1999.
“It’s meant to be a little tongue and cheek as the band is pretty stubborn in their ’90s style sensibilities,” admits Hot x Proxy’s guitarist, Chris Hynes.
With lyrics penned by lead vocalist and guitarist Lucas Coady, the band further workshopped “Fake It” over a series of Zoom sessions at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic (fingers crossed). With the band aiming for an upbeat anthem “that plays to HxP’s formula of teetering on the edge of pop and hard rock”, they nail the sweet spot that tickles our own ’90s sensibilities.
“It’s a play on ‘faking it until you make it’,” says Hynes. “Specifically, the act of faking ‘it’ a little too far, and ‘breaking it’, especially as you age. The band is acutely aware of their age and place in the scene and it’s always fun to reflect on the day to day, song and dance that is often involved in playing in a rock band.”
Hynes is also quick to add that after a certain time period, staying relevant is just as much about how to “adjust your style in spite of it all to stay fresh.”
“Fake It” is the first of three upcoming singles that Hot x Proxy with be releasing in the coming months, as well the first single off their upcoming, sophomore album. Hot x Proxy’s new self-titled release will make its way into the world sometime in early 2021, while “Fake It” will be available on all streaming platforms next week.
