The new single from Fredericton’s Wicked Vices, “Butterfly,” plays on the Butterfly Effect – not the 2004 film starring Ashton Kutcher, but the theory that even the most minute of actions, like a butterfly flapping its wings, can bring about drastic changes. With several new changes within the band, not to mention everywhere else, it seems the band are optimistically looking for something a little different.
Released ahead of the band’s upcoming LP, “Butterfly” retains Wicked Vices’ hard rock punch, serving up high energy riffs and Kristen Vautour’s gutsy vocals with, perhaps, a small side of No Doubt. There’s a refined edge that comes to it, though, with the addition of guitarist Joel Dixon (The Waking Night, Burning Coast) who joined the band back in November, along with guest musician Adam Tattersall (Weak Size Fish, Snorkelers, Dr. Thunder).
“The new single ‘Butterfly’ started to be pieced together before the pandemic hit. Once we were able to rehearse again the song came together very organically,” says Wicked Vices’ drummer Ryan Barrie. “It’s a straight rock n’ roll tune with a hooky guitar lead. One you wanna crank up when you’re driving kinda thing.”
TwoFifteen label manager Erin Bond chalks the new material up some of 2020’s less-than-desirable experiences, with the band taking an approach that it takes a few eggs to make an omelet.
“I’m really excited for everyone to hear the music Wicked Vices have been working on,” says Bond. “I know the past months have been a little hard on them, and they’re channelling that into the new songs.”
Wicked Vices are currently recording their self-titled debut LP with Dylan Ward at Shiftwork Recording.
