Music Video: Dog Day Put Their Human Suits on for ‘Pictures’

Dog Day have joined a motley crew of bands that includes Nickelback and The Cure (but not Mötley Crüe) as they sing of some curious photographs. And much like we will never know exactly what was on Joey’s head, we will also never guess what Dog Day saw, aside from the opportunity to lord this secret knowledge over us through subtle humour while hinting they might also be lizard people.

Imagine showing up at a party and discovering something entirely unexpected. You’ve just had your human suit washed and pressed for the first time since quarantine began and you’re doing your best to remember how to mingle. Perhaps a little overeager to fit in as a perfectly normal, functioning and anatomically correct member of society, you laugh a little too hard at a humourous tale concerning the host’s offspring and accidentally unhinge your mandible.

You momentarily slink off to readjust your face before your chin can fall back into the punch bowl, and there, in a quiet corner of the party, someone has amassed a curious collection of photos. Unbelievable photos. Photos of yourself.

How could this happen? More importantly, why would this happen? There’s nothing particularly incriminating about it, but it could very quickly lead to any number of uncomfortable social situations. In the end, you’re left with little choice but to clumsily excuse yourself from the party and withdraw to someplace your might safely document your experience as song lyrics.

Of course, Dog Day’s new video for “Pictures” doesn’t explicitly state any of that, but they’ve certainly given us enough clues. Director/bandmate Seth Smith only muddies this by filming the band mid-glade, surrounded by mirrors like some Gorgonian titans.

“Pictures” will appear on the much-anticipated fifth full-length album from Dog Day which will be released August 14, 2020. Presents is the first album from Dog Day in seven-years and promises to draw upon a history of gothic synth-rock while stemming from their gloom-pop roots.
