No doubt there are more than a few common breaking points for a relationship with a musician, but if there was ever a true acid test for establishing the one, it’s probably the moment you’re asked to turn your wedding into a music video. Braden Lam is probably feeling very confident at the moment, having just recently been married and subsequently releasing a video for his new single, “Habit of My Heart.”
“It was more so the opposite,” says Lam. “We shoot a personal wedding video and use some of the footage for the music video.”
In either case, the got spoiled on both counts with a video by Tim Mombourquette.
“She was surprisingly cool with it and I’m grateful we could share some of our special day with everyone – after all, the message of the song is ultimately about love and commitment.”
The song itself is a celebration of the relationship with his wife that began two years after meeting at the sold-out release of his last album, Driftwood People.
“There was a point in our relationship where I said, ‘I feel like I’ve known you forever’,” explains Lam. “The only way I could describe our connection is that it’s already a habit. It’s a feeling that is ongoing and never going to end. I wanted to capture that feeling in the song outro.
“’Unlearn how you been living and outgrow how you been raised’ were some of the first lyrics I wrote for this album almost two years ago. It seems fitting that this song is released first to set the tone for the rest of the album theme and stories I share on those tracks.”
The album further reflects on the growth he’s made in the last two years. The title itself, Inside Four Walls, refers to the bedroom in which Driftwood People and how he’s moved beyond them. Appropriately, he’s worked with Colin Buchanan (Paper Lions, Adyn Townes, Sorrey) to develop his sound.
“It’s about thinking outside of the box you grew up in, maturing into a new life, being open to new views and a change in perspective,” says Lam.
Inside Four Walls is due out later this Fall. In the meantime, Lam has announced a series of virtual tour dates that will take him to outlets and venues across the country in support of his new single.
