New Music: Loviet Releases Stunning Debut EP ‘Everyone Knows The Thrill When It’s Over’

In an exercise akin to a six-word short story, indie-pop rocker Loviet packs a massive narrative into her debut EP Everyone Knows The Thrill When It’s Over. It’s a pretty slick trick to pull off on a blink-and-you’ve-missed-it three-song release, but in just over 10 minutes Loviet exposes some universally experienced wounds for an insert-your-own-pain-here narrative. On the bright side, you can still dance to it.

Loviet’s three-part journey encapsulates a myriad of questionable, hormone-fuelled experiences that we all typically throw ourselves headlong into at the “cusp of seventeen.” Namely, the artist describes that story arc as: “falling in love (‘Everyone Knows’), the high while you are in it (‘The Thrill’), and the crash at the end when it’s over (‘When It’s Over’).” If you haven’t brought your own hard lessons to this party, you haven’t lived.

Loviet adds that the album, in part, also reflects her our journey from the East coast to Toronto.

“[It] represents a lot of feelings, like moving from one city to another and leaving lots behind. I really hope that when people listen they can envision their own story.”

Short and sweet, the EP has a strong aesthetic that screams gated reverb, synths, HAIM and whatever Debbie Harry ate for breakfast.

Along with the EP, Loviet simultaneously released a video for the album’s final track. “When It’s Over,” in particular, focuses on the fallout of an early relationship that’s gone sideways; half destructive, half self-preservation.

“I’m not hiding behind anything lyrically — it’s exactly how it is,” says Loviet, though she notes that, in real life, the destruction of the CDs that takes place in the video may not have actually happened.

“I don’t think I ever gave them back,” says Loviet. “I think I honestly just kept a bunch of their shitty CDs.”
