Dropping his second single of 2020, Reynaldo Dames, aka REY D, teaches us to love ourselves again. Normally incorporating multiple genres from Gospel to Reggae to Hip-Hop, his new track, “4 Love” is a conscious decision to take those influences to a soulful place.
“4 Love” is a reminder to love yourself, a beautiful heartbreak turned love ballad to pull at your heartstrings. The subtle instrumentals and added harmonies push vocals to the forefront as REY D delicately pulls the emotion out of each word.
Dames explains that the song is about putting your heart on the line for someone new, but acknowledges that, quite often there’s an inherent fear and certain risks involved.
“Overall, the meaning behind this song is being on the search for love,” says Dames. “To go deeper in the lyrics, it describes the transition from being heartbroken, keeping the walls up around your heart and not letting anyone in fully to making that first step to put it all on the line. These are the feelings that have come about after a considerable amount of time of being single and learning to love oneself to now ready to pour that love into someone.”
Dames moved to Nova Scotia from the Bahamas in 2007 and now resides in Woodstock, New Brunswick. In 2019 he won the award for African Nova Scotian Music Association’s (ANSMA) Rising Star of the Year, and was most recently nominated for ANSMA Artist of the year for 2020.
According to Dames, he is currently working on a new EP and hopes to release it by the end of Summer 2020. The new EP will also include his previously released single, “Loyal.”
“I want to be able to open up on a new level when it comes to my music and expressing myself,” says Dames.
