Last week the world lost one of its greatest songwriters, John Prine, due to complications from COVID-19
Prine’s passing is not something we are easily coming to terms with. And though celebrating him in the wake of his passing is not something we hoped we would be doing this weekend, it’s something we feel we must do nonetheless. This unequivocally gifted songwriter left us too soon, but not before acting as an inspiration to innumerable musicians and fans during his career.
On Saturday night, join us on The East Live at Home for When I Get to Heaven — A John Prine Tribute, and ode to this country-folk legend. Hosted by Matt Steele & Devin Fox of Steele Fox, the evening will be filled performances of John Prine’s songs by a handful of musicians who have all been influenced by him during their careers.
“Prine is a massive influence on me as a songwriter,” says Fox. “He has a way of taking complex ideas and stories, and distilling them into songs while filtering them through his own sarcastic wit that few others can do. His debut album would be considered a greatest hits for a good many artists.”
Steele echoed this saying, “I remember hearing ‘In Spite of Ourselves’ and ‘Dear Abby’ and thinking that those were two of the best folk songs I’d ever heard in my life, more pastoral and accessible than Dylan, with a voice as honest and full of life as anyone could ever ask for in a singer.”
Prine’s far reaching influence bore itself out while trying to put this tribute together. Getting people to join was not difficult and everyone that did join had at least 2 or 3 suggestions of other people that they thought would do the man justice.
The evening will include performances from Deerfield, Michelle Morrison, Mike T Kerr, Terra Spencer, Kev Corbett, A.J.H. Gillis, Noah Tye, Alicia Toner, Rudy Pacé of the Pacé Family Orchestra, Alexander and the Great Ones, Leona Burkey, Josh Bravener of The Hypochondriacs, as well as from hosts Matt Steele and Devin Fox of Steele Fox.
