Timely, soothing, and nostalgic, Kristen Martell’s third preview of her upcoming album has revealed itself to be “Fade Away,” her latest single. The folk artist from Nova Scotia’s Mahone Bay once again weaves her signature, intimate style into a heartfelt reminder that we need to take care of ourselves.
“’Fade Away’ was written during a solo trip I took last summer to the Gaspe Peninsula at an isolated cabin in the woods and it was a song I flowed with completely,” says Martell. “I felt at ease and a weight was lifted. There was such an amazing energy at this place and I heard so much music.”
“The cabin was crooked and proud of itself and it gave me this sense of self acceptance; that I too could be proud of my cracks and crooked walls.”
The tune opens with Martell finding a cozy little cabin to settle into, priming herself to dash all of life’s worries away. This cleanse soon extends to past mistakes and happy memories that should be left as such, and before long, the tune has come full circle with its self-love goal; an admirable goal in a time where panic and anxiety are taking precedence in our world.
Martell’s ability to entrance listeners is multi-dimensional in nature. Her soft voice provides a sense of safety, her melodic instruments find beauty in simplicity, and all the extra bits, from the choir in the chorus to the slight bells near the end, add that delicate touch that complete Martell’s work of art. The stunning end result is hardly a surprise from an artist of Martell’s calibre.
“Once in studio, the song took shape and became a power ballad of sorts. We added some organ and sonics and it shined beyond my wildest dreams,” says Martell. “I really like this song now and it’s my personal favourite of the album.”
“To share it to the world feels pretty powerful.”
Kristen Martell’s upcoming album, Coming Home, is set to be released in April, 2020.
