If we were handing out class superlatives, Loviet would take the category for Most Likely to Become a Wildly Successful Pop Star, particularly if we had all graduated in the class of 1979. Her latest release, “Everyone Knows” is a summer-ready single that might have come straight from golden age of synth-heavy hits; a direct descendant of Debbie Harry and Huey Lewis, and possible a second cousin to Julian Casablancas.
The song might be about indulging in a pseudo-infatuation, the kind that involves the bad-boy you’re supposed to know better than to get involved with, but it’s entirely possibly the crush in question isn’t a person at all. The way Loviet tells it, “Everyone Knows” might just be about New York City, the big heartbreaker itself.
Maybe it’s a little tongue-in-cheek Lovin’ Spoonful-style ode to The Big Apple that safely skirts the topic at hand and a little artistic allusion where naught else need be said. After all, to find the killer, the heartbreaker, that dasher of dreams and destroyer of worlds you wouldn’t have to look much further than the very place where if you can make it there you can make it anywhere. The idea of brushing so dangerously close to fate is a seductive one.
Or it’s simply the adventure of the big city.
“We were visiting NYC right in the middle of that heatwave last summer so it was spicy in the city, but kind of added to the whole vibe of this song. Hot and bothered; sort of like the whole summer romance thing,” explains Loviet.
“I wrote this song [with] a producer/artist named Dominic Florio, while I was there this summer doing some co-writing. [He was] an absolute gem to work with, freaking power-house producer. We did writing and demoing of four whole songs in two days. He worked very fast, and just got the vibe. We both loved the 1975, MUNA, 80s and Bryan Adams-esque power jams. We definitely had a great time working this song.”
