TURBO, Halifax’s answer to Motorhead, dropped their sophomore single into the music world in the form of “Alive.” Branding themselves as “nitro-rock,” the band promises to deliver a high-octane kick, and its population of four seasoned rockers have the tools to do so.
“Alive … is more or less a written testament to bad-decisions with one of the most badass riffs on the album slapped on top of it. The song features a call-and-response guitar harmony and an anthemic chorus,” explains the band.
“There’s not too much more to say on it apart from being among the most fun songs on the album; definitely one to do a keg stand along to.”
Indeed, there’s certainly no faulting the riff; the dragon’s roar of a guitar that populates the majority of the tune is, without a doubt, the highlight. It would pair nicely with a highway, a party, or a boss battle. The same could be said about the solo that shows up in the second half of the tune.
The excellent instrumentals pair with screamed vocals whose lyrics are surface-level and anthemic, creating a track with a charged, high-speed energy. Their upbeat party-style sound is versatile and crosses genre borders between glam and speed metal as well as punk and even metalcore. And while it’s not always easy to make out the lyrics, the pacing is carried throughout the track, ensuring a complete lack of dull moments.
With their audible ’80s influence, metalheads across all generations will find a soft spot for TURBO, given the visceral passion the band has for the genre. Though we may not be able to easily sing along with this anthemic tune, the instrumentals in “Alive” pack a phenomenal punch, and it will be interesting to see where the band goes from here.
“Alive” is the second single off the band’s upcoming album, Fast as Fvck, which will be released later in 2020.
