Melonvine’s Derek Thibeault recently found himself facing some challenging circumstances after the departure of both drummer Taylor Pennell and bassist Patrick Martin. Rather than scrap the band altogether, Thibeault took one-man-band approach, working a bit of a studio magic to produce “Confessions.”
Melonvine took a brief hiatus in 2019, following the band’s split, with frontman Derek Thibeault, taking some time to regroup. However, the wait seems to have been justified. Thibeault returned to the studio this year to record what is sounding like Melonvine’s strongest material yet… and he’s performing all the parts.
Aside from vocals “Confessions” has Thibeault performing guitar, baritone guitar, bass, and drums.
“I decided to get it going again because pouring my heart into songs is an outlet for me and I love the thought that someone might hear it and have it be an outlet for them too,” says Thibeault.
Of course, in light of band’s recent split, something might be read in the fact that, lyrically “Confessions” is all about relationships, albeit of a somewhat more romantic nature.
“It relates to feeling that happiness is a destination, but the reality is that the right person in your life can fill that void with their presence. You become high on that person,” says Thibeault.
Produced and engineered by long time friend, Don Levandier (The Motorleague) and mixed and mastered by Adam Dincorn at Undertone Studios in Saint John, NB, “Confessions” aimed for a big sound, and they found the right people for the job. Levandier and Dincorn both have a history of turning out hits.
“Our goal with this track was to record and mix something in New Brunswick, that sounded like it could compete with anything coming out of the bigger studios in Toronto or Vancouver, and could fit well with anything on rock radio.” says Levandier.
Sounds like Melonvine has gone through a bit reinvention and come out all the better for it.
