Nick Earle is trading in his blues rock for something just a touch grittier with his newfound band, The Reckless Hearts. Their first single together, “I Wanna Know,” probably isn’t the Valentine’s Day anthem of romance you were expecting, but a tale of jealousy delivered on overdriven guitars and a wash of cymbals.
Earle explains that “I Wanna Know” came together pretty quickly. Working with Dan George on drums, and Hunter Madden filling in for Clare Follett on bass, the song was recorded at Vibe City Studio and mixed at The Blue Room, both of St. John’s, NL, and mastered at The Citadel House in Lewisporte, N. However, the song, and even the conception of the band, first came together over a weekend in New Brunswick.
“I had a riff idea while out on tour last summer with the band,” says Earle. “We had a day off and set up our gear at a friend’s house to jam – BBQ some burgers, and enjoy New Brunswick for a day. I pulled the riff out of my pocket, found some scribbled lyrics about a jealous guy, and finished the song within a 20 minute jam. Simple, but very much Rock ‘n’ Roll.
“I then started playing that song with the band and it was that song that really ignited the whole ‘Reckless Hearts’ endeavour. While it is still my own project, I think it is important to note that this is different from the debut record Breaking New Ground and although those songs will continue to live on, this new material is a new lane that is full of denim, hair flips, and guitar solos.”
Nick Earle & The Reckless Hearts have a bunch of yet-to-be-announced dates lined up for the summer, along with a full album that’s being released on April 24th.
