Unfortunately, it’s not always entirely convenient or appropriate to make romantic declarations while standing in a yard, holding a Peter Gabriel-blasting boombox over your head while wearing a trench coat. This may, in fact, prove to be both needlessly invasive and difficult, especially if you’re too young to have seen Cameron Crowe’s earlier work and don’t know what I’m talking about. In light of such, and arguable in the best of times, such brazen gestures are entirely unnecessary.
As in the case of “Can I Come Over?,” the new single from Prince Edward Island’s Little Cities, they suggest that the object of your affection, under ideal conditions, might be your best friend, that such sentiments are implicit, and we can leave all the heavy lifting to John Cusack.
“Can I Come Over?” is a song about being young, in love with your best friend and needing to find the (liquid) confidence to tell that special someone how you really feel about them,” say the band in a statement.
And so there’s that. You may be best friends. Able to finish each other’s sentences, read each other’s mind, double-check to make sure the shirt they just picked out is still relatively fresh without getting totally grossed out, but at some point someone has to make that leap of faith. There’s always a question of “how well do you really know your best friend?”
“I think we need to have a talk before we’re sober,” sings Hannah, in response. Coincidentally, he notes that”Sober” was the original title for the song.
Hannah is also quick to point out that 4 out of 5 Little Cities band member have best friends they are either dating or married to, but fails to point out which ones. So, if you’re interested, you’ll be forced to play a game of Little Cities roulette! Good luck!
Little Cities currently have the makings of an album lined up, as well as a series of tour dates that are being kept under wraps, but you can catch them in Fredericton and Halifax next month.
