In the immortal words of Los Angeles-based alt-rock wonder of the ’90s, the New Radicals, “you get what you give.” That’s a sentiment shared by Rose Cousins on “The Return (Love Comes Back),” the latest and third single from her upcoming album, Bravado. The song offers words of wisdom for weathering the storm and an assurance that, despite some very human limitations, each of us are up to the task.
The song and video tell a classically human tale: that what you put out there in the world tends to come back to you. There’s a layered message here that may be as simple as “your vibe attracts your tribe” or “hard works pays off” but sometimes, and more importantly, when we’ve struggled and lost ourselves there’s usually someone or something prepared to dust you off and remind you of who you are.
Experience teaches us that. Eventually. Don’t forget to back up your work and save often.
Regardless of which side of the storm you’re seeing things from, “The Return (Love Comes Back)” is a reminder that people have a great capacity for caring even when we are enduring our own struggles.
Directed by Jenna MacMillan and stars Sonia Chaudhary and her children Maiya, Kiren and Naveen, but also included in the video are also a couple surprise cameos from fellow Prince Edward Island musicians. It’s easy to spot a few quick glimpses of Kinley Dowling, along with blurry Irish Mythen, and the most momentary and oddly humble appearance of Cousins herself as she’s quickly wheeled through her own music video.
Rose Cousins’ new self-produced album, Bravado, is set for release on February 21, 2020 via Outside Music.
