Scientists of Sound are back and banging the gavel with the release of new video for their track. “After It Bends” is one of fourteen tracks from SoS’ recently released The Beginning (of the beginning of the end) – an album which explores the abuse of power, protest and the fate of humanity’s future. Despite being an instrumental track, Scientists of Sound have a very clear message – drawing our attention to the video itself and an outline of our dystopian present.
We are living in increasingly troubled times. We may have just narrowly avoided World War 3, with America’s recently impeached Cheeto-like president betting a second term on a campaign of distraction and denial. Scientists of Sound deliver us a timeline of the events that have lead us to the tragedy of the horrible Ukraine International Airlines plane crash which killed all 176 passengers on board, 63 of which were Canadian citizens.
Using images from the news, social media and a combination of archived video, we see the evolution of frightening mistakes Donald Trump has made starting from 2018 until what we have witnessed today with the current tension between Iran and the US. The end of the video leaves us with a series of choices, as if we were reading a Bandersnatch novel. However, in this situation the choice is not ours to make and we were clearly never in control.
“While watching the situation with Iran and the US unfold, I think the thought occurred to a lot of people that this could get out of hand really easily,” says singer and guitarist Craig Mercer. “We looked at what had led to the current state of affairs and thought about some rather terrifying ways it could all play out, and present these as “options” for people to choose in the video. Suffice to say there is no choice, and the central theme of the video is the fact that we are not in control.”
In conclusion, we nominate the Scientists of Sound for president.
