Nova Scotian duo Moira & Claire have released their first holiday single – a humorous take on the perennial subject of Christmas carol fodder: will there be snow on Christmas morning? And whether you are dreaming of a white Christmas or not, we know that by the end of the season we won’t be so keen on it. “No Snow” might have all the hallmarks of the traditional green Christmas lament, but it’s a clear lesson in being careful what you wish for.
Moira & Claire describe their first Christmas tune as “quirky and cheesy” and they proudly boast that their video for it is equally so.
The DIY video features the two woefully jumping into the season, long before the season itself is ready to be jumped into. It’s worth a few chuckles, with the girls making some unseasonal attempts at winter fun that are all too relatable – the pitfalls of grass sledding are like indelible wounds.
“‘No Snow’ is a comedic Christmas song about wishing for snow before Christmas,” explain the duo, “having that wish come true on Christmas day, and regretting that wish a month later when you’re snowed in.”
The lyrics themselves provide a bit of fun, once we get past the naïve request for a mere sprinkling of snow. Moira & Claire quickly pump the brakes with a jolly “wait a minute!” before launching into the festival chorus of “I’m so dumb dah dumb dah dumb dah dumb dumb dumb dah dumb dumb dumb.” It makes for a great holiday singalong with the whole family – particularly the ones that insist they enjoy the cold weather.
“We recorded the song this Fall, but the tune has been around for a while and we had filmed the music video a couple of years ago. It’s fun to see it actually out now.”
