Mahone Bay’s queen of AM soft rock, Jennah Barry, has released a third single from her upcoming album, Holiday. “Pink Grey Blue” harkens back to the golden days of singer-songwriters with a pleasant melody about a less-than pleasant challenge.
Opening on a deep sigh, Barry attempts to reconcile the internal and external perceptions of body dysmorphia, leaving us to unwrap the layered concept of being “pink and grey and blue” on the inside.
Barry’s voice is nothing but silk as she laments the unravelling inner-monologue that becomes a roar in the quiet moments and can break in on times that are even less convenient.
“And I should know the thunder rolls when there are things to do,” sings Barry. It comes off like Susanna Hoffs singing the songs of James Taylor; channeling depth, sensitivity and introspection.
“Pink Grey Blue” glides along Barry’s nylon strings easily, before being joined by Colin Nealis (Andy Shauf) on clarinet and gracefully ascends to the gentle cacophony of a magical mystery tour, before disappearing into the clouds entirely on a wave of lap steel and a flutter of strings. It’s a delicate thing that shines brightest through those modest punctuations.
The song will be appearing on Jennah Barry’s first album in eight years, making it one of the most anticipated east coast albums for 2020. Her sophomore album, Holiday, will be released on March 27, 2020, via Forward Music Group, and while the album might not be available in pink, grey, or blue, you can pre-order it from Barry’s Bandcamp in both mint and black coloured vinyl (along with your customary digital downloads and CD-coloured CDs). She’ll also be performing a handful of dates on both sides of the holidays.
