Halifax’s award-winning Aquakultre revisits their hit single, “I Doubt It,” with a new video showcasing a vibrant north end community. Premiering via clothing line Family Over Fame, that video follows a day in the life of Aquakultre’s Lance Sampson as he travels throughout his neighbourhood.
While Sampson has gone into detail on the song’s lyrics of systemic oppression and segregation, the video is aimed at the smaller differences that slide in on a different scale. It’s not always about the big societal issues, but the ones that can be found close to home and can matter just as much to an individual.
“I wanted to portray a community essence with the ‘I Doubt It’ video and bring it back to the roots, of what North End Halifax is. Loving and caring for one another in our community, and spreading that warmth. Sometimes our community, to me anyways feels segregated, not with race, and colour, but with groups and friends. I wanted to kinda show that, yeah, I’m from the ol’ neighborhood, but music has connected me with so many different groups of people and musicians, and I just want to keep us connected, and keep us working together in this. It’s a day in the life of narrative and you can see me in the beginning writing the lyrics to the track, and going about the day, and in the end, staying true to what’s important: family,” says Sampson.
Directed by Deves Matwawana the video for “I Doubt It” also pulls in footage from Connor Lindsay which shows off the energy of Aquakultre’s live performances. After all, what brings people together better than music?
The single is the first single to be released from Aquakultre’s upcoming full-length album, Legacy, which is expect out sometime in early 2020.
