There’s more than one way to break a heart. That’s the message of Loviet’s new song “Symbol of Love,” but rather than the typical, run of the mill, everyday flavours that generally start and end with romantic partners, Loviet gets into those gutting experiences that come from the directions you might least expect.
The song grew out of a collaboration with Hill Kourkoutis, and while the two presumably didn’t share a bunch of terrible exes, what they did share was experience with the music industry.
“[It was] a way to get to know each other, keep the real things real but after we got talking we both realized how absolutely affected we felt, nothing but tugging heart strings,” laughs Loviet. “It was almost as if I was 15 again, and sharing stories about bad breakups or ex-boyfriends but all the stories we’re based on non-romantic relationships, to be honest.”
From that rainy January day, swapping stories over sushi, “Symbol of Love” grew out of their shared wounds from an omnipotent, monolithic, and often indifferent, industry that will demand everything from you without any guarantees of reciprocation.
“In these cases it’s almost worse then a boyfriend because there is no right or wrong,” says Loviet. “There’s no explanation, there’s no equal connection. So that idea of closure and the ‘symbol of your love’ part has so much to do with the constant reminder or struggle to get past the issue.
“It’s such a dicey mix. Something you are passionate about like creating music, and then key players or networking. I started making music when I was young so I’ve run into many situations that played my emotions more than I even realized until later on in life.”
The song was released via Substream Magazine last month, but the new stripped down version for the video ditches the dance beat for something far more suitably raw. Loviet’s delivery shows a passion and vulnerability that you might expect in a career that asks nothing short of self-immolation to subjectively measure your worth.
