There’s nothing that’ll get your creative juices cranked up in quite the same way that a road trip will, especially when it means seeing one of your favourite bands. It’s why Dali Van Gogh now have a new music video for “Down at the Hitching Line” – a song about leaving your home town, which was uncoincidentally written while the band were leaving their hometown.
Dali Van Gosh were on their way to see the Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience performing in Moncton when “Down at the Hitching Line” was written.
“I had the riff and chorus somewhat figured out and basically sang the rest of the melodies out in the car ride. My then-keyboardist Devon Roberts, who was coming with me to the show, got super excited over it, to the point that we ended up renting a guitar before we got to the casino. Wrote the lyrics that night after the show in basically a drunken stupor,” laughs Kent, D”Still have the recording on my phone of our demo! It’s a mess, but all the lyrics and melodies are there.” [Editor’s Note: He does not. We checked.]
“The song really came to life once I got the full band involved and we starting hashing out what became the intro with the whole acapella bit,” says Kent.
Taken from the band’s fourth album, Under Her Spell, Kent explains that the song is about more than just getting away from your hometown (even for a show). It’s about taking a place – for better or worse – for granted.
“It’s about running away from home,” says Kent, “Escaping your small town or small world, so to speak, to go after something bigger, but then returning home to discover that the things you loved there are all gone, or changed, or have been destroyed, and coming to grips that maybe your leaving was part of the reason that happened.”
Dali Van Gogh have a handful of dates comes up, including their ongoing residency at CFB Stadacona, before slowing down for the winter months. The band do, however, promise they’re currently planning their biggest tour yet – surprises and all.
