The latest single from Keith Mullins is a co-write with Dave Gunning in ode to first responders, live savers and caregivers. “Somebody Cares” is also a reminder, for those who tend to see humanity in its very darkest moments, not to lose heart.
“Somebody Cares” grew out of true story told by a nurse. Rob Joseph, a dentist and friend of Mullins, had begun gathering stories from people in his industry when it struck a chord with Mullins.
“He was asking his friends about stories,” explains Mullins. “We were having a conversation about the struggles of people in healthcare and we thought they needed a song/tribute. This nurse sent in a story about how she lost a young patient, went to the funeral, and she all of a sudden couldn’t move. I took that to Gunning and this is what we wrote and recorded.”
“My favourite songs that I write are really grounded, real stories, that have potential impact,” says Mullins. “My friend, who is a tough guy RCMP, couldn’t make it past the chorus without crying and saying he’s going to have to wait til later to listen. That told me I’m doing my job, connecting with people on a deeper level through music.”
The song won’t be a standalone, as Mullins has been preparing for his next album that will consist of darker, moodier material. He’s been writing with Kelli Loder, Matt Andersen, Gunning, Chris Kirby, Cam Nickerson, Casey May and more. For his next project Mullins will be penning songs with veterans while working with Fabian Henry.
