Little Cities have returned with “Forever,” a new single that warns about the potentially long lasting side-effects of one-night stands and the dangers of catching the feels. If you’re not careful, one night of fun can turn into a lifetime of commitment… which, according to the band, is even better.
“Forever” breaks the mould of countless songs that have come before it, those that lament lost loves and the bitter sting of heartache, and instead reminds us that sometimes these things work out… forever…..
“It’s quick out of the gate, with the protagonist reflecting on a casual relationship that they are coming to realize that they are ‘the one’,” says Josh Pitre, Little Cities’ synthologist.
Of course, in typical Little Cities fashion, the band present this conflict to you in the traditional format of mid-2000s pop punk. If you listen carefully you can hear the angst seeping out between the power chords. Despite their sickly sweet lyrics and all their romantic notions, the bass drum practically rattles with the chains of domestic bliss.
“As you can probably tell,” says Pitre, “we are wearing our influences on our sleeves on this one. I’d say it has some classic pop-punk influence a la Blink-182 and Yellowcard, mixed in with some modern synth-driven pop, a la Carly Rae and Metric. It’s definitely our most punk-driven tune but still has the glossy production and pop shimmer you’ve come to expect from us.”
The single is the band’s first to be released since their 2018 Friends Floors EP and, thankfully, heralds the coming of their next album.
“We’ve been keeping busy writing toward a new album which we’re hoping to release in the spring and we’re really excited to have been recently working with Gavin Brown (The Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies, Billy Talent, Metric),” says Pitre.
Sounds like we’ll be locked in for a while.
